Winston Churchill spoke on a troubled Christmas Eve
Shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill travelled secretly to Washington to confer with U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt and coordinate plans for war with the Axis powers. On Christmas Eve, Franklin and Churchill addressed the American people by radio from the White House, incident to the traditional lighting of the national Christmas tree.
In the following video, historian David McCullough describes this historic meeting and broadcast. This three-minute sequence is taken from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s 2009 Christmas Concert. The full text of Churchill’s remarks appear below the video, and are memorable indeed.
