Heaven’s Hallelujah

In 2017, pianist Garth Smith published a Christ- and Christmas-oriented version of the Leonard Cohen classic Hallelujah. He called it, "Heaven's Hallelujah".

Smith explained,

While Cohen's original Hallelujah is extremely popular and loved by millions, it isn't always appropriate to be sung in a religious setting due to its darker lyrics.

"Heaven's Hallelujah" starts with Cohen's Broken Hallelujah as we deal with the trials of this life.

The song then elevates the listener to a "Hopeful Hallelujah" as we realize that Christ brings a higher purpose to life.

As we recognize that Christ's atonement will raise us from the grave, the song progresses to a "Praiseful Hallelujah".

The song then reaches the climax with an eternal expression of "Endless Hallelujah" in the presence of the Savior as we cross to the other side and experience the infinite love of Christ for us.

HEAVEN'S HALLELUJAH

Arrangement by Garth Smith
Lyrics by Hailey Buehler and Dennis Isaacson

I see you walking by real slow,
with eyes cast down, and head hung low
Oh life just has a way of getting to you

But there is One who knows your fears
Who feels your pain, who cries your tears
Who mourns your every broken hallelujah

Chorus:
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

When you look up to heaven above
For rays of hope, and signs of love
A Still Small Voice will whisper softly through you

You wake and eat, you sleep and dream
Yet there is someone in between
Who calls you to believe in hallelujah

Chorus:
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Oh raise your head, and hold it high
The King of Kings was born to die
He rose again to offer His love to you

He came to serve, He came to save
He came to raise you from the grave
He came to fill your soul with hallelujah

Chorus: (repeat 2X)
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

When you are on the other side
Surrounded by loved ones who've died
His grace will be so sweet and precious to you

He holds you in a warm embrace
You see the Savior face to face
Your heart cries out with endless hallelujah

Chorus: (Repeat 3X)
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
